Emilee Petersmark, Kate Pillsbury, Dan Rickabus, and Ben Zito are the 4 members of the folk-rock band The Crane Wives. They use a distinct 3 part harmony in many of their songs and claim inspiration from folk music, rock, heavy metal, and even blues. Many of their songs explore themes of heartbreak and difficult experiences. They've said in interviews that they enjoy exploring their different experiences through the lens of myths and folklore, and that it's some of the biggest inspiration for their music.
The Crane Wife is an old folk tale about a crane who falls in love with a man who once rescued her. She plucks all of her feathers and pretends to be human so that the man will marry her. The crane continues to pluck her feathers every night they live together, but grows weak and sickly, and eventually she has to leave the man. The theme of sacrificing yourself for others is often explored in the Crane Wive's songs.
